Momentum - Sorta

 

Been a productive month, managed to pull apart the doors and remove the quarterlights, stripped the paint off, and have been cleaning up a few odds and ends. Been slack on photos

Turned the car around so i can get to the other sider easier


Only photo i took was when i was getting rid of the old Toyota Ipsum i had 

Checked over my gearbox and that looks fine, rebuilt the shifter mechanism, played around with rust treating a couple of smaller things like door components and the gearbox crossmember. 

My son is doing mechanical engineering at school and one of the assessments they have is to make a shifter knob. They machine it with an M10 thread i had an old long shifter in my box which i gave to him and his teacher was ok with him shortening it and rethreading the stick with a M10 thread so i can use it. Which i think will be a nice touch for both him and i.

In additional news the 1500cc engine i had my eye on fell through, but i do have have an engine its a very early 1300cc FH engine for a MKIV spitfire, with twin SU carbs. I havent see it yet, but the guy im buying it from picked it up last week and has had it runing and its apparently in great shape. I've got to go check it out sometime to confirm but anything has to be better than that 1200. Likely with the factory SU i'll probably not bother fitting the DCOE, i'll probably put the headers on it... because why not :D 

Also by complete chance i managed to get chatting to a semi-retired hotrodder at the hardware store who will be willing to do a cashie on my door welding, so thats all the big problems taken care. 

I have some tidy up i can do, but now im pretty much waiting till the temperatures warm up so its warm enough to paint. My garage is part of the house, but its unheated so its commonly below 10-12c  this time of year. Ideally i want it to be above 15c before i start paint. Was looking at garage diesel heaters... maybe :D 

I have plenty of odd jobs to do, clean up the loom, maybe add the circuits for headlight and horn relays work out what the best way to incorporate the fuseblock i picked up. 

Been hitting up Aliexpress for bits basic 6 way fuse block


Picked up some air bag lifters, which were recommended by a guy at the triumph club to help align the body. 


Found a box of assorted u nuts 


An assortment of LED lights for tail/indicator and side lights. couple of boxes of miscellaneous electrical connectors (ring, and butt connectors mainly) 

So slowly coming together. Been checking my boxes and so far i seem to be missing, 1 seat rail and a demister vent cover, im sure the seat rail is somewhere, i still have a couple of boxes to check. Hopefully the demister vent is there somewhere too as they seem a bit tricky to find

Last update, managed to also get hold of the STL file for the plastic sun visor caps which i've only ever had one. so i'll try resin printing a set at some point as see how they come out 


Been one of those slow progress is still progress months.

More stuff arrives, and "deoderized" fish oil

So, now I've been thinking through reassembly and the bits and pieces I'd need to get it together. I've rebuilt the pedals, painted them etc. heater box i repainted with epoxy. Pulled the master cylinders apart and got them down to the shop for a light honing. Dropped the rear axles and the hub puller to the mechanic as i dont have the 17mm allen key drive to pop them. Dropped all the suspension parts to the mechanic to put the bushes in. all sorts. As i was going through in my head the assemble process i realised a couple of things: Trunion kits dont contain the top seal,  My heater valve was completely shot (would explain why the car was always warm inside),  Complete bush kits dont contain shock bushes, or rear diff bushes.  You can get a set of solid brake lines made to length in the UK and shipped to NZ for about 1/2 the cost you can get them made here. Wheel bearings and other such stuff

So some updated photos, Different angle Not all this work was done this week, the steering rack, wishbones, sway bar were all done last week. This week the uprights were attached, brake lines fitted. new wheel bearing fitted to the front. Found out i had a set of the kits that had the absolutely rubbish grease seals in them, the metal casing is too big and the felt is about 12mm wide, if you try and fit them nothing lines up at all. I removed the casing and reused the old one. took the felt out and cut them to about 1/2 thickness fitted them and they all look ok. I got them from Rimmer Bros, so I'll have to drop them a line tomorrow to see what they have to say. Fitted in the diff, put the read shocks and vertical links in to visualise where i needed to run the brake lines. The two tone paint job is due to using two pots of paint, the first (the lighter one) was the one i managed to spill half of. I looked at the rear axles but i ran out ...

It all started along time ago....

So whats this all about? Well its probably more for me than anyone else. I've decided to set this up to document the rebuild of my 1968 13/60 Triumph Herald Saloon. If you're reading this maybe there might be something in here that will help you along the way, maybe not :) First some history I purchased Ed (a nickname from his license plate) back in 2003/04 as a non runner, he had been sitting under a tarp in someones driveway for quite a few years.  He was in a pretty sorry state of disrepair but had very solid bones. (nothing much but surface rust) My mate Anthony and i went out to have a look at him and even though i was looking for a GT6 at the time, i decided for the $200 they were asking i would be silly not to.
